Five weeks before the event in Las Vegas, one piece of information is still missing: the prize that the Mr. Olympia 2026 champion will win.
Everything else is confirmed: dates, venues, ticket prices, the list of participants. But the prize — which will determine whether this becomes the first million-dollar bodybuilding contest — has yet to be announced.
And there’s a reason that silence is interesting this year.
For the First Time, the Arnold Pays More
For decades Arnold Schwarzenegger had an understanding with the sport’s powers that his Arnold Classic prize money would not exceed the Mr. Olympia’s. The Olympia was the crown, and the money reflected it.
That’s over.
Schwarzenegger raised the Arnold Classic men’s open top prize twice in two years — first by 67% to $500,000, then by another 50% to $750,000. The total purse went from $1 million to $1.5 million over the same stretch. His framing was blunt: let the others chase us.
Mr. Olympia did not respond. His top prize remained at $600,000 for the second year in a row. Thus, 2026 became the first year that an Arnold Classic paid more than the previous year’s Mr. Olympia.
Andrew Jacked took home that $750,000 in Columbus in March, plus another $10,000 for the Best Holder award. It is the largest individual prize in the history of the sport.
Where the Olympia Money Stands
Here’s the Olympia’s climb, and it’s steeper than most fans realise.

Note the flat line. The prize sat at $400,000 for nine straight years before the 2024 jump.
Beyond the Men’s Open, the 2025 event distributed over $2 million across its eleven divisions — up from more than $1.8 million in 2024. The Men’s Open alone accounted for just over $1.1 million of it. Other divisions have been climbing too: Classic Physique paid $100,000 in 2025, double the previous year.
To give you an idea of how quickly things have changed, Ronnie Coleman won eight Mr. Olympia titles between 1998 and 2005 and never took home more than $155,000, and that was his last year at the top. Today’s runner-up earns more than that.
Could It Reach $1 Million?
Nobody outside the organisation knows, but the pressure is obvious.
Olympia president Dan Solomon has hinted at significant prize money changes, though without specifying an amount. If Olympia wants to surpass the Arnold Classic, it must reach $750,000. Two round figures are being discussed: $900,000 (matching the 50% increase from the last raise) and $1 million.
Furthermore, a detail in the schedule makes a multimillion-dollar prize money newsworthy. The Arnold Classic UK awards $250,000 and is held approximately one week after the Columbus event. If an athlete wins both, they pocket $1 million in a single week. If a single week of the Arnold Classic can award $1 million, Olympia, which crowns the world champion of this sport, seems to have difficulty paying less.
Whether that pressure translates into an announcement before 24 September is the open question of the off-season.
What a Winner Actually Earns Now
The purse figures undersell it, because top athletes stack contests.
Derek Lunsford earned roughly $1.2 million across 2025 — the first seven-figure year in the sport’s history — from the Arnold Classic, the Pittsburgh Pro and the Olympia combined. His Olympia earnings alone total around $1.25 million over four years.
That’s the real shift. It isn’t just that first prize went up. It’s that a full competitive season now pays like a career used to.
When Will We Know?
Olympia prize money is usually confirmed in the weeks before the event, and sometimes announced from the stage during the weekend itself. With finals on 26 September, an announcement in early to mid September would be normal.
